More timber plantations need to be developed in south-east Australia to safeguard the future of the region’s timber industry, according to politican Mitch Williams.

Mr Williams, the South Australian opposition spokesperson for forestry, called for action after fresh job losses in the region, such as the 90 being shed at Mount Gambier by Carter Holt Harvey as a result of a housing market slowdown and overseas competition.

Carter Holt is making 150 workers redundant at three mills. Staff at the company’s Morwell facility have met to discuss the 30 redundancies being offered during the next eight months.
