The Sandy-based manufacturer was chosen by SmartLIFE, a government-backed scheme which aims to develop the next generation of sustainable housing using MMC.

Pinewood’s units form part of a 100-home project, with houses built at three sites in Chatteris and March in Fenland, Cambridgeshire.

Three-quarters of the houses will be built using three different MMC systems, including Pinewood’s timber units, which will be compared against the remaining brick and block homes.

Comparisons will be made for costs and sustainability using Key Peformance Indicators, CaliBRE and SMARTWaste. Findings will be published at the end of 2007.

Pinewood managing director Geoff Arnold said: “The SmartLIFE project provides us with a real opportunity to apply our offsite manufacturing capability and demonstrate the effectiveness of building in timber frame.”
