Use of southern pine flooring from the US in the UK increased by almost 70% between 1999 and 2001, up from 90,000 tonnes to 150,000 tonnes according to American Softwoods.
Eddie Pearce, European marketing director for American Softwoods, believes the rise has been influenced by home decor programmes such as the BBC‘s Changing Rooms.

He said: “More people are voting with their feet for wooden floors. The aesthetic quality of wood and its durability, especially southern pine from the US, makes it an attractive alternative to break up the monotony of traditional carpet.”
