A Philippines’ government decision to lift a logging ban in Aurora could threaten five protected areas, according to a local religious leader.

Father Jose Talaban said the activation of logging in the towns of Casiguran, Dinalungan and Dilasag was bad news for watersheds, waterfalls and landscape in the area.

He said tree numbers were already decreasing in certain protected areas due to logging by the Industries Development Corporation, which has concessions totalling 57,069ha around the three towns.

Fr Talaban said the government’s decision violated laws aimed at preserving protected areas.
