The Pan European Forest Certification (PEFC) Council needs more resources to improve monitoring of national certification schemes and labelling, consultants have recommended.
Other areas which could benefit from further resources, particularly additional staff, are public relations and technical assistance.
Independent consultant Indufor Oy was commissioned by the PEFC Council to review the PEFC framework and assess criticism and comments of the system in a bid to make improvements.
The consultants also say the PEFC scheme and label needs the support of a well-planned advertisement campaign directed to buyers and the public.
