PEFC has claimed that it is the first forestry organisation to bring 200 million ha of production forest under independently certified sustainable management.

PEFC secretary-general Ben Gunneberg said that the milestone would allow the organisation to continue to push for more certified wood in the marketplace and even more sustainably managed forests.

“The 200 million ha of PEFC-certified forests are the world’s largest resource of certified wood,” said Mr Gunneberg.

“We will strive to further increase this area and the availability of certified timber, while proactively working for an even greater use of and demand for forest certification in the market place.”

Mr Gunneberg also offered his congratulations to the PEFC-endorsed companies that had helped the organisation break the 200 million ha barrier and said that the milestone was an important step towards “the vision of a world in which people manage forests sustainably”.
