The programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC) Council has endorsed Canada’s Sustainable Forest Management Programme.

Approval of the Canadian scheme, developed by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), means PEFC is the first forest certification system to cover more than 100 million hectares of forest.

Peter Johnson, manager of CSA International’s Forest Products Group, said: “We are delighted that PEFC certified Canadian forest and paper products can now be labelled with the PEFC logo. The PEFC endorsement provides access to international markets for eco-friendly produced forest and paper products.”

He said the PEFC logo is a “clear sign” that forest management practices certified by CSA International comply with principles of sustainability.

The endorsement followed a year-long assessment of the Canadian system by independent consultants.
