Less than half of UK potato box makers have had their designs tested to British Standards, according to research undertaken by PalletLink.

The organisation, which provides technical support for the wood pallet, box and case industry, said some manufacturers even stamp potato boxes as conforming to BS 7611 when they do not meet strict BS performance requirements.

PalletLink’s John Harvey, who chairs the BSI technical committee, is collecting views of box makers and users on behalf of BSI and results will guide the 2004 revision of the standard.

A discussion paper has been drawn up by PalletLink based on comments received, with topics including restricting the use of the BS 8-high stacking mark unless supported by box tests; a new 1.25-ton capacity; timber suppliers’ concern that new 1.25-ton boxes should use current board lengths; and a new minimum strength requirement for corner joints.
