The company said the latest figures, for the full year ended December 2012, came despite tough trading conditions and particular challenges relating to poor demand from the construction sector.

"We’re satisfied with the results in what has been a challenging year," said Norman Scott, Scott Group operations director.

Mr Scott said the current financial year had brought better economic prospects, with new business wins increasing the company’s market share. Cost control and operating efficiencies were also helping to deliver results.

"We can definitely see the signs of recovery," he added. "Even in recent weeks we have seen a measurable uplift in activity, specifically in our construction sector customers, so we are now looking forward pretty positively."

The Scott Group employs around a 1,000 people UK-wide.
