The first company in the UK to use a green technology finger-jointing process from New Zealand claims that the system has helped reduce its annual timber wastage by 50%.

Glasgow-based Stadium Packaging Services has been using the adhesive, Greenweld, to finger-joint short lengths of wood into longer lengths in order to make previously unusable waste viable.

The process allows the removal of weaknesses such as knots, and the strength of the joints exceeds BS 5291.

But, more importantly, the adhesive can be used on wet, unseasoned timber. Stadium Packaging divisional manager Martyn Pullan said: ‘This means that when it is approved for constructional use on timber with more than 18% moisture, the timber can be used for high-quality studs, trusses, windows and door frames in the building industry.’

Now Greenweld is attracting the interest of other Scottish businesses under pressure to comply with packaging waste regulations due to come into force next June.
