Oxford Brookes University student Christian Spendier has won TRADA’s pavilion design competition which aims to promote the use of demountable timber in contemporary architecture.

Mr Spendier, a third-year part-time student, will see his design constructed at the Ecobuild exhibition next March. The next stage will be for students to work with TRADA and Timbmet to complete the design and construct the pavilion.

The competition, which attracted 27 entries from Oxford Brookes students, was supported by Timbmet, which supplied the materials and assisted with offsite fabrication. The pavilion will be erected in honour of Timbmet founder, the late Dan Kemp.

Students were tasked with designing a pavilion which exploited the many attributes of timber in high quality architectural design.

Initially they designed and prepared materials to experiment with form, space, structure and components of their design.

Entries had to meet the following criteria: creative thinking; making a lasting impression with Ecobuild visitors; an advertisement for the use of timber; demonstrate potential for offsite manufacture with timber; be capable of assembly within two days; be able to be moved and reconstructed.

The 20m² pavilion will include design information drawings and 3D models of the winner and runners-up.

“The submissions were of an extremely high standard which focused not just on visual stimuli, but some entries looked at stimulating exhibition attendees through movement and sound,” said TRADA’s Dr Andy Pittman, one of the judges.
