The UK builders merchant market is expected to experience recovery in late 2002/2003, according to a major report just published.

The first edition of the West European Builders Merchants Market, which also focuses on France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, predicts a strengthening in EU GDP in 2003 which should feed through into a buoyant construction sector and lead to a “general recovery” in the builders merchant market, including the UK.

The overall market in the EU is estimated to be worth around £70bn, with the UK’s 13% share trailing Italy and France (both 15%) and Germany (26%).

The report, designed to complement the UK Builders Merchant and Plumbers Market report published in February, reviews supply trends in the markets, the position of leading merchants and identifies areas of potential change in the future.
