Greenpeace has called on the UK construction industry to replace illegally-sourced plywood with Forest Stewardship Council-certified OSB.

Tropical forests are “being destroyed to make way for throwaway products like plywood”, with many UK construction companies continuing to source timber from illegal and unsustainable sources, according to the environmental action group’s forest campaigner Mariana Paoli.

Greenpeace has published a new report, Setting a new standard: Alternatives to unsustainable plywood in the UK construction industry, which extols FSC-certified OSB as a viable alternative to illegal plywood.

“This report promotes FSC which is a great tool for the construction industry to remove illegal plywood from the supply chain and replace it with sustainable plywood,” said Paul Toyne, developer Bovis Lend Lease’s head of sustainability.
