Merchants are anticipating better fire door sales, according to the latest BWF-Certifire scheme survey.

The survey of builders merchants who sell fire doors recorded one of the highest levels of optimism for future sales, despite a continuing lack of confidence in the current market.

But sales during the first quarter fell back further than expected following the gradual improvement over the rest of 2009.

The BWF said the lack of confidence in the current market appeared to reflect day-to-day experience, while the optimism on future sales was perhaps a more general sense across the construction sector that things were not as bad as they were a year ago.

The BWF’s technical helpline has been inundated with questions about fire doors over the past two months.

It said the lack of understanding of the product, such as how they are constructed was “frightening”.
