Malaysia should optimise the value of all its forests’ natural resources, according to deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Forests should not be seen only as a source of raw timber, Abdullah said at a meeting of the National Forestry Council, citing honey as an example of a non-timber resource that could be exported.

The deputy PM disclosed at the meeting that Malaysia’s latest annual allowable cut under its Eighth Malaysia Plan was to be 1.36 million ha.
