Timber companies that make deliveries in central London need to start planning now for the various restrictions and road closures which will operate during this summer’s Olympics, the Timber Trade Federation has advised.
Drivers may encounter restricted turns, changes to parking and load facilities and changes to some traffic signals due to the Olympic and Paralympic route networks (ORN & PRN) – which will be used by athletes and officials as they travel between venues, accommodation and transport hubs.
On road event days, the race route and some surrounding streets will also be closed to traffic. Only two events are taking place during the week – a cycling time trial on Wednesday, August 1 and the men’s triathlon on Tuesday August 7.
Daily changes are expected to roads within the Central London Zone, stretching from Marble Arch and Hyde Park Corner to Victoria Embankment and Trafalgar Square. The ORN will include areas of Greenwich, including the A102, Shooter’s Hill Road, while the A1203, A11, A12 and A4 are also affected.
Civil enforcement officers will patrol the routes and CCTV cameras will be used to aid enforcement, while some lanes will be reserved for accredited Games vehicles. Games Lanes will be clearly signposted and operate between 6am-midnight, with infringements attracting penalty charge notices.
“There are a range of options for working differently to get around these restrictions, including reducing, retiming, rerouting and revising deliveries,” the TTF said.
“As daytime journeys could be severely affected during the Games, many businesses may want to carry out deliveries/collection activity outside normal working hours.”
