Mick Hopping, who had served in the timber trade for more than 50 years, died on January 3, aged 81.

Mr Hopping joined the British Army at a young age but his career was cut short when he was invalided out after being caught in the explosions in the King David Hotel during the Middle East conflict in 1946.

His first job in civvy street was with WW Howard Bros. There he enjoyed many years making numerous friends and contacts throughout the timber trade who would remained with him throughout his working life. He later joined E Sherry as a sales representative. He then had a brief spell at Arnhem Timber where he met Trevor Andrews, with whom he went on to form Andrews Timber & Plywood Ltd in 1978.

During the 1980s he was a cult figure within the Irish timber trade where he made various friends and acquaintances. He was a good talker and storyteller and a supreme optimist. He was always expecting a large order from an Irishman making furniture in his back garden in a distant part of Ireland who promised cash on delivery. He continued to work at Andrews Timber as director and company secretary until he finally retired in 2001 at the age of 75.

He will be greatly missed by his wife Joan, son Ian and many friends and colleagues throughout the timber trade. If anyone wishes to pass on their condolences please contact Trevor or Marion Andrews on 01277 657167.
