Mr Ginnings started his timber career with the agent Albert Plaut in Essex, and worked for Champion Corporation of America as its Far East-based plywood buyer, living in Taipei and later Manila.

On leaving Champion he set up his consultancy Ginnings Far East Associates in Singapore. He later moved to Windsor with his Australian wife Margaret who survives him, as do his son Philipp and daughter Marika.

Timber industry consultant Michael Buckley said Mr Ginnings had one of the best analytical minds in the timber industry so a multitude of clients, as wide as Michael Weinig in Germany, Inchcape in Singapore, AHEC in the US and the Malaysian Timber Council, benefited from his expert knowledge. The pair had fun assisting the launch of Asian Timber journal for Benn Publications, and for many years Mr Ginnings also collaborated with John Wadsworth of Intermark in UK.
