A lifelong timber man, Mr Chalmers started as an apprentice with the Meyer Group, and through various mergers and acquisitions worked for the same employer throughout his life.
He was offered the position of sales manager at Calders & Grandidge in 1983 and then built the scope and influence of that role for nearly 30 years, becoming the company’s business development director.
As a buyer of poles, sleepers and fencing he drove a hard bargain and had immense and detailed knowledge.
In the 1980s Mr Chalmers worked on standardising pole and sleeper specifications for the industry. These standards run on today, a testament to him. Over the past 20 years he was an instrumental member of both the UK Wood Preservation Association and the Western European Institute of Wood Preservation, again seeking to standardise and improve effectiveness, editing and commenting on legislation.
Mr Chalmers was the holder of the Royal Warrant for Calders, an honour he bore with great pride as an ambassador for the business.
Calders extends its deepest sympathy to his wife Maureen, daughters Gemma and Laura, mother Colleen, brother Steve and sister Sheila.
