New Zealand veneer manufacturer Southland Veneers Ltd will suspend production and shed about 20 jobs.

The Kennington-based company, which had already halved its staffing levels because of difficult market conditions, will introduce the cutbacks on December 23.

It hopes to resume production in the new year when exchange rates and market conditions have improved.

Radiata pine veneer exporter Southland Veneers blamed its decision on a slowdown in Asian markets and a strong New Zealand dollar.

The job cuts follow Tapanui-based Blue Mountain Lumber’s axing of 30 sawmilling jobs.
