The Timber Trade Federation’s (TTF’s) National Panel Products Division (NPPD) has backed plans to tighten rules on formaldehyde emissions in the manufacture of panel products.
European Standard EN 13986 currently allows for E1 and E2 class emissions, with the latter permitting 30mg or less of formaldehyde per 100g of oven dry board for OSB, MDF and unfaced chipboard.
However, the NPPD wants to see the E2 class removed from the rules and E1, which permits 8mg of formaldehyde per 100g of oven dry board, made standard.
“NPPD recognises increasing concern about formaldehyde emissions and wishes to ensure that TTF members again lead the way in best practice,” said TTF head of technical and trade policy Nick Boulton.
