Millions could be added to the economy in Northland, New Zealand, by processing timber instead of sending raw logs overseas, according to a timber industry spokesperson.

Derek Colebrook of the Whangarei Wood Processing Cluster, which represents 12 timber processing companies, said Northland’s annual wood harvest had grown by 1 million m3 during the past four years and is expected to almost treble in the next decade. He said adding value to the timber in Whangarei is the way forward.

  • A “logs to jobs” tour has been organised by the cluster to showcase the potential of the industry. The July event will be attended by politicians, government departments and business.
