North American mill sales managers earned about 4% less on average in 2002 than they did in 2001, according to a survey by industry publication Random Lengths.
It is the first time mill sales managers have collectively reported lower average income than a previous year since the survey began in the 1980s. A total of 151 people returned questionnaires from 1,271 sent out.
Respondents reported an average annual earning, including salary, bonus and commission, of US$87,267. Western Canada was the only region reporting higher earnings than 2001, though few responses came from this area.
Managers in all regions predict a modest earnings increase in 2003, with the south set to be the highest at around US$101,000.
