North American softwood lumber exporters have started to make small inroads into the Indian market, according to Random Lengths International.

Canada is working on a free trade agreement with India. A few exports of heat-treated spruce, pine and fir from British Columbia have begun and it is hoped that exports of western red cedar and yellow cedar will follow by the end of the year.

The US exported 3.1 million board feet – mostly Douglas fir – to India in 2010.

India currently imports most of its softwood lumber from Europe.
