High performance windows from timber window and door specialist NorDan have been chosen for Forestry Commission Scotland’s new office in Smithton, Inverness.

The £1.1m building, which has earned a BREEAM “excellent” rating, had two principal design criteria – the use of timber and sustainability.

NorDan supplied fixed light windows as well as fully reversible windows. The window sashes of the latter can be turned through 180º, bringing the external glass to the inside for easy cleaning. The windows can also be locked open at 100mm to allow natural ventilation.

The double-glazed units are Argon-filled with low emissivity glass, bringing the whole window U-value down to 1.4W/m²K. Argon-filled cavities are now standard across all the company’s door and window ranges.

Architect HRI opted for a green finished stain externally and a clear lacquer internally

NorDan’s fully glazed outward-opening double doors were also specified for the fire escapes.
