In response to increasing legislation and regulation, Norbord has invested in extensive health and safety training at its South Molton plant in Devon.

EEF Western delivered 304 days of training to 76 managers, supervisors and safety representatives at the mill, and all staff involved achieved a nationally recognised Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (IOHS) qualification in managing safety.

Wayne Hovord, general manager at the mill, said: “To free up staff from their work, in order to complete the IOSH qualification, was a significant investment on our part. However, the rewards in terms of managing risks will ultimately add value to our business.”

Mr Hovord said that if staff are not aware of current legislation, lack training in people management and the proper safety systems are not in place, it can translate to a true cost to businesses in the form of accidents and ill-health.
