Nexfor has increased the proportion of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified timber in its Sterling OSB product from 50% to 70%.

The Stirlingshire-based company said the improvement sets its product apart from those of its European competitors and meets sustainability requirements now demanded by customers.

In future, all literature and packaging for Sterling OSB will say at least 70% of wood employed in production is obtained from FSC-recognised growers.

Doug Lamont, of Nexfor’s Inverness plant, said: “The Forest Stewardship Council’s mark is the only globally accepted standard for timber production and has a real bearing on acceptability and market share.”

Mr Lamont said UK housebuilders, retailers and users of OSB or other board products were looking to suppliers to obtain FSC certification as part of their own policies on sustainability and the environment.

“We are on a path of continuous improvement and our ultimate goal is to eventually achieve 100% compliance,” he added.
