Newport softwood importer TG Howell & Sons Ltd has lost about 150m³ of imported carcassing and home-grown timber in a major fire.

The blaze overnight on February 16, suspected as arson, also destroyed a building, resaw, cross-cut saw and dust extraction equipment.

“It will take a week or two to replenish our stocks,” said managing director Terry Howell. But he said the company could source timber from its other sites in the meantime.

Fire crews from across southern Wales attended the fire at the two-acre site.

TG Howell also operates a sawmill and builders merchant at Pontypool and a sawmill at Rogerstone. Its timber is supplied internally in the group and to other merchants nationwide.
