A local community in New Zealand has suffered another jobs blow following Kaingaroa Timberlands’ decision to axe seven contractors.

The decision, which will lead to the loss of 86 jobs, is due to the company’s reduction of harvest levels from 2.4 million m3 to 2 million m3. It follows the loss of 57 positions last year with the closure of the KFL timber processing plant.

The 2,000 strong Murupara community would be “devastated” by the decision, according to one of its ward members on the Whakatane District Council.
