New Zealand has banned imports of pine and Douglas fir nursery trees following the discovery of a fungus on imported American cuttings which causes the pine pitch canker disease.
The 300 Douglas fir cuttings, from California, were being raised in the South Island when the infestation was found late last year. Imports of sawn timber or poles made from the two species are also banned unless treated to a specified level.
