The company, which has built the factory at its Newport headquarters, specified equipment that could be flexible with high throughput to handle its housing projects.

After a recommendation from another timber frame manufacturer and some web-based research, Green Hill contacted Weinmann’s UK distributor Young Black to explore an automated solution.

The system supplied to Green Hill includes a WEK 100 framing station for fully-automated nailing/stapling, processing of sheathing, routing of windows, doors and power outlet openings, as well as outside contours and automatic positioning and fixing of battens.

The other machine installed was a WBS 120 high-speed linear saw for component processing, featuring 2 NC-Grippers, a positoning system, conveyor belts for waste removal and automatic good part sorting.

"We were finding it increasingly difficult to get hold of ready-made timber frames that met our specification," said Darran Watts, director of Green Hill.

"We decided, therefore, to build a new division of Green Hill to make timber frames that had the right insulation and specification for our projects."

Mr Watts said Green Hill had much more flexibility with its designs now it had its own timber frame kit and bespoke frames could be supplied to differentiate itself from the market offering.
