Opportunities for smaller companies to become Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified have opened up with the launch of a group chain of custody scheme by Oxford Timber Audits.

Group manager John Barne said a number of companies had already expressed interest in signing up, including importers, garden suppliers and a company specialising in marine decking and pontoon construction.

For many smaller companies, an individual certificate was not cost-effective, he said, and he hoped a group scheme would enable them to reap the benefits of certification and bring new products and services to market.

Mr Barne also advised small companies not to be put off by the apparent bureaucracy and complexity. “It really is quite simple. Membership of the group will help you over any hurdles. Use the FSC logo to help sell your products and to proclaim your green credentials.”
