The launch of a new trading platform for the UK independent floor coverings market could provide a boost for wooden floors.

Flooring One is a joint venture between Carpet One, the biggest trading division of US retail giant CCA Global Partners, and Solihull-based Associated Independent Stores (AIS).

The venture offers independents the chance to take on their plc rivals by offering wider product ranges, more competitive pricing, training and higher customer service levels.

Carpet One has a hardwood division, selling brands including Kährs, Bruce Hardwood Floors, Hartco and Mannington as well as a laminates arm offering the Pergo, Armstrong, AdvantaOne and Wilsonart brands.

David Grebby, managing director of Flooring One, said the name of the new venture represented all types of flooring, not just carpets.

He said: “Some of our members already handle solid wood or laminates and it will be our objective to help their understanding of the market.

“I think the independent who is not offering wood or laminates is missing out on up to 25% worth of business.”

He said some wooden floor manufacturers had been in contact about supplying their products through Flooring One.

He said: “We aim to become the UK’s largest and most profitable network of retailers operating in the floor coverings’ sector.”

More than 100 AIS members in the floor coverings market have already signed up to the venture.

AIS members generate combined annual sales of more than £100m, the majority in carpets. Flooring One’s medium-term target is to double the figure.
