The first container load of sawn timber products was shipped from Södra‘s Mönsteras mill in Sweden at the weekend, marking a new era in the port’s history.
The German-owned ms Alrek will call at the Mönsteras mill port every Saturday and initially load 25-30 containers. The vessel is capable of loading 152 containers with approximately 6,800m³ of sawn timber.
New port manager Claes Winquist says the export was previously carried out via a port north of Mönsteras and added: ‘By moving the container traffic to the mill port we reduce truck transport, thus saving both economic resources and the environment.’
Mr Winquist says the container traffic also opens up new possibilities of transport to the mill. ‘We want to receive goods for Södra this way. Another future improvement would be to handle transport for customers outside the Södra Group.’
