The organisation, which officially started trading this month, is hosting its Building and Timber Conference on March 26 and 27 at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel.

The speaker line-up has yet to be announced, but the provisional timetable says there will be a keynote address and “Fortis presentations”. The event will also include two “meet the merchant” sessions and a gala dinner.

Fortis co-chairman John Parker said it would be an opportunity to “see first hand what Fortis is all about”. “It will be a significant event, where we can show the work we are doing to make Fortis a name to be reckoned with and a group that people will want to join,” he said.

The formation of Fortis by the 30 members of the Cemco buying group and eight from the Combined Buying Association was announced last spring. Their combined turnover of more than £1bn makes the group the biggest independent in the field.

Among its membership are Covers Timber and Builders Merchants, Alsford Timber, Ridgeons, Sydenhams, Howarth Timber and Building Supplies and Howarth Timber Engineered Solutions.
