Entries for the NETTA timber design competition are due to be judged yesterday. Five local schools – St Mary’s, Kelvin Hall, Endeavour High School, Newland School and Cottingham High School – all submitted entries which included items such as boxes and chairs.

In another project, NETTA linked up with Hymers College in Hull and sponsored pupils in the European finals of the Young Enterprise Scheme for budding young business people.

A new group of youngsters has entered this year’s competition and Hymers College master in charge, John Gravell, attended a recent NETTA meeting for a trial run of the presentations the teams will give to business leaders at the regional competition for Yorkshire and Humberside.

The 14-year-old group is making wooden name plaques and a wooden shoe remover, while the senior group is making metal chimers with a wooden component.

“Both presentations were excellent and the association is helping the students financially with £400 sponsorship and technical advice on the timber being used to manufacture the products,” said NETTA member Richard Gore.
