Demand for nearly new woodworking machinery has increased as merchants and manufacturers look to cut the cost of machinery investment, according to Leicester agent TM Machinery Sales.

“Due to the recession we have a far higher number of used vertical panel saws for sale than usual, mainly due to companies going bust,” said sales director Matt Pearce.

“A particular feature of the current situation is that many of the used machines we are selling are younger models, sometimes just a couple of years old.”

Timber frame house manufacturer Westframe bought a two-year-old Striebig Control model last year.

Westframe general manager David Thacker said the totally reconditioned machine had only around “35 hours on the clock” and cost 30% less than a new model.

Shopfitting specialist IDESS said it normally bought new equipment but in the current climate it opted for a three-year-old Striebig Control to size laminated MDF panels and chipboard.

“We urgently needed a vertical panel saw to handle small batch work, to work alongside a beam saw,” said IDESS production manager Tim Harper.

TM Machinery is the sole UK agent for Striebig saws.
