Abdy Kermani, professor of timber engineering at Napier University’s School of Engineering and the Built Environment and its Centre for Timber Engineering, has received a prestigious medal from the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) for the second consecutive year.

Prof Kermani was awarded the Howard Medal for the Best Paper on Construction Materials. He received the award alongside co-authors PhD student Guillaume Coste and visiting lecturer Dr Jack Porteous.

Their paper, which beat off competition from leading academics and industrialists worldwide, investigated the development of a novel connection system for timber structures.

Last year Prof Kermani received the Bill Curtin Medal, once of ICE’s highest accoldades, for a paper examining how low quality timber can be used to create efficient and impressive structures such as bridges.

Prof Kermani said receiving the award was an “acknowledgement of the innovative nature and high calibre of our work”. “To win one medal was great news, two is absolutely phenomenal – we are delighted,” he said.
