A Danish-based company has become the first overseas independent assessor for the Malaysian Timber Certification Council‘s (MTCC) chain of custody certification.

MTCC recently approved the registration of NEPCon (Nature, Ecology and People Consult) following a 2004 decision to amend its procedures to allow overseas-based assessors to apply for registration.

Eighty-three companies had been awarded MTCC chain of custody certification by the end of 2005 and the organisation said that the export of MTCC-certified timber products has increased to more destinations in Europe.

By the end of 2005, 55,400m3 of MTCC-certified sawn timber, mouldings, laminated finger-jointed timber, plywood and garden furniture had been exported to the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, the UK, France, Australia, Greece, Denmark, Poland and Italy.

MTCC-certified sawn timber has been exported to Denmark since August 2005.
