MSP for South Scotland Michael Russell has checked the construction progress of the new £4.7m timber haulage route in Eskdalemuir, near Lockerbie.

Scheduled for completion in late 2008, the route will take 10,000 heavy goods vehicles off Eskdalemuir’s roads every year.

“I’m really encouraged by seeing the road under construction,” said Mr Russell. “I was very impressed with the level of innovation of materials and partnerships that will not only provide great benefits to Eskdalemuir but also teach lots of lessons to the forest industry.”

The project, being managed by UPM Tilhill, will ensure the local timber industry’s £5m annual contribution to Scotland’s economy is maintained.
