The early day motion “Wood and the 2012 Olympics”, proposed by Paddy Tipping MP, recognises the benefits of wood as a sustainable construction material and supports Wood for Gold‘s efforts to make the 2012 London Olympics a showcase for the wood industry.
The motion also applauds the campaign’s bid for wood to play its part in helping to deliver the most environmentally sustainable Olympic Games ever.
Wood for Gold’s offical launch at Westminster was attended by 10 MPs and two Lords. Simon Hughes MP, the Liberal Democrat’s party president, was among those at the event, which also included representatives from TRADA, the Timber Trades Federation, British Woodworking Federation, Wood for Good, ConFor, Construction Products Association and the DTI.
The launch was designed to brief decision makers on the campaign and its message that the timber sector can help minimise the environmental impact of the Olympics.
“Timber has now got an opportunity of a lifetime to demonstrate what it can do,” campaign chairman Martin Gale told the launch. “It’s up to us in the industry to go out and deliver.”
Meanwhile, TRADA and Wood for Good have produced a new 48-page publication which demonstrates how today’s engineered timber solutions can deliver practical, sustainable and beautiful sports buildings. The document, which contains case studies, is designed to show how timber has “immense” architectural potential for Olympic sports stadia.
