The £50m facility will produce electricity via the use of biomass fuel and residues from UPM Shotton’s existing paper making operations and is to be inaugurated by Mr Hain on June 22.

The UPM Shotton paper plant already recycles 700,000 tonnes of waste in its production of 100% recycled newsprint and the company claims that the renewable energy plant has already helped it to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions from 54,000 tonnes per year to 18,000 tonnes.
