Liberal Democrat MP Lembit Opik has lent his support to the Ty Unnos timber construction system, which, he says, could provide a solution to the shortage of affordable housing.
The Montgomeryshire MP is now calling for cross-party support for the system, which is manufactured by Oswestry-based Elements Europe, part of the Pickstock group of companies. He claims it will significantly improve the issue of overcrowding, reduce the barriers for first-time buyers, and provide employment for his constituents.
“It’s a very high quality product and at Code 4 [of the Code for Sustainable Homes] it is remarkably energy efficient. This is one of those ideas whose time has come.”
Ty Unnos – or “house overnight” – is a modular construction system that enables a two-storey house to be built in less than 12 hours. It uses low-density Welsh timber, with laminated hollow box beams forming the main load-bearing structure, making it lightweight, but exceptionally strong.
