Mozambique has set a 180-day time limit for forestry concession holders to present management plans.
Companies which do not submit plans will have their status reduced to “simple licence holders” and can only log up to 500m3 a year.
The agricultural ministry is also protecting valuable hardwoods by imposing a 75% reduction in the amount of “first class” species which can be logged. In a further measure to encourage domestic processing, the ministry says a maximum of 50% of wood logged in the country’s forests can be exported in the form of unprocessed logs.
