A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed between a pro-forest protection group, the NGO Coalition for Liberia, and the Forestry Development Authority (FDA) in Liberia.
It will open the door for full public participation in the Liberian forest sector reform process. A task force is to be set up to coordinate and supervise the implementation of the MOU.
Under the terms of the agreement, the NGO Coalition of Liberia will independently monitor forest law enforcement by the NDA, logging companies’ compliance with forestry regulations, participate in the review of internationally driven projects to ensure their goals are in line with national priorities, and participate in the development and formulation of future forestry regulations by the FDA.
