"The House That Kevin Built" (THTKB) is a new version of Europe’s first prefabricated house made out of waste and organic material, which was built in six days during the 2008 exhibition spin-off from the Grand Designs TV show hosted by Kevin McCloud.

Westgate Joinery, based in Ringmer, East Sussex, specialises in Accoya and Medite Tricoya modified MDF. It will use a combination of both for the windows and some elements of the cladding.

Managing director David Pattenden said both materials use uniform plantation-grown FSC certified timber modifed with a non-toxic chemical and have a service life of 60 years.

THTKB has been designed by architect Duncan Baker-Brown, co-founder of BBM Sustainable Design and a senior lecturer at Brighton’s arts faculty, who devised the original building. The new house will be built at the University of Brighton.

The project will use locally sourced waste material from building sites, recycling centres and web forums. Walls will be made from ply cassettes of waste material slotted between timber structures with additional solar panels.
