A growth in container business for sawn timber exports and consumer goods boosted cargo throughput at Malaysia’s Miri Port Authority by 29% in the first quarter of 2004.

Sarawak’s development and communciations minister Wong Soon Koh said the port, which handled 144,400 tonnes during the quarter, had given rebates to port users in order to attract cargo.

Kuching Port Authority saw its cargo business increase by 7.4% to 2.3 million tonnes, with containerised traffic growing by 8%.

Mr Wong said the port had recently launched an internet facility which enabled shipping agents to submit documents electronically, thus reducing operating costs.
