Mr Ewing, addressing UKFPA members after the AGM at the Scottish Parliament building at Holyrood, also acknowledged industry concerns about the displacement of wood from the domestic wood-processing sector into large-scale electricity generating plants.

Meanwhile, UKFPA members were also told that the recommendations of the Woodland Expansion Advisory Group had been accepted.

UKFPA executive director David Sulman said he was pleased the minister recognised the seriousness of some of the issues.

“There are major challenges and threats facing the sector at present and the governments in Edinburgh, Westminster and Cardiff have an important part to play in helping to address them,” said Mr Sulman.

The Scottish government has taken steps to try to minimise the effects of the power-generating sector competing with the timber industry for wood raw materials.
