Meyer Timber has taken delivery of the first of a fleet of 20 new trucks as part of its plans to undertake more deliveries in-house.
The new vehicles are Scania 18- and 26-tonne models. The first has arrived at Meyer Timber Corsham and the rest will be delivered over the next two months.
Meyer’s total investment in the vehicles is between £1.6m and £1.7m and the company is also recruiting 10 new drivers.
To date, the company has mainly subcontracted haulage, but managing director Richard Lazenby said its new fleet would mean its split between in-house and outsourced transport would be 30/70, enabling it to take greater control of logistics and offer more delivery versatility.
“We’ll be able to provide that much more flexibility in terms of next-day delivery,” he said. “It will enthuse our people to take orders later in the day, knowing we can deliver the next day. We’re already promoting next day delivery up to 4pm and aim to go to 5pm in coming months.”
