Paula Horne, senior research scientist at the Finnish Forest Research Institute, said other sectors could learn from the Metso programme’s safeguarding of high-quality nature values, cost-effectiveness and social acceptability.
Ms Horne said the financing of healthcare or merger of local authorities could “follow the lead of the forest sector”.
The programme is approaching the end of its pilot phase. A decision will be made on its future in 2007.
